Angry Customers Storm MTN Offices Over Blocked Sims

Disgruntled MTN customers have flooded the company’s offices nationwide, voicing their frustration and disappointment over the recent blocking of their phone numbers by the telecom giant.

Naija News reports that on Sunday, MTN deactivated the mobile lines of numerous users, reportedly due to their failure to connect their National Identification Numbers (NIN) with their phone numbers.

This action follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) directive to disconnect Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) numbers not linked to NINs, set to be enforced from July 31, 2024.

At the time of this report, MTN has not yet released an official statement addressing the situation, and the total number of affected mobile numbers remains unclear.

Many subscribers began gathering at MTN offices early Monday morning, July 29, 2024, forming long lines at the entry points.

This latest deadline was an extension from the previous date of April 15, 2024, to July 31. However, the situation has led to widespread anger, as many subscribers find their lines blocked despite having completed the required NIN linkage.

On February 29, the NCC warned that 45 million subscribers could face disconnection for not completing the linkage process.
