Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has called on the Senate to swiftly pass the Federal University of Mining and Geosciences bill.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang said this on Tuesday while he spoke at the public hearing on the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (Repeal and Enactment) Bill 2024 (SB12) for the establishment of the Federal University of Mining and Geosciences, organized by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
Mutfwang said there was need for investment in all alternatives to oil and gas industry. He said the establishment of Federal University of Mining and Geosciences would help in training manpower for the mining sector. 
He said the new university would also help to address unemployment and contribute to the nation’s economy. He said the value chain of the entire mining sector would be developed through the establishment of the university.
Speaking to the Senate committee led by its chairman, Senator Dandutse Muntari Mohammed, Kastina South, he said, “The need for an alternative to the oil and gas industry, which has driven our economy for many years, is clear. This bill is an absolute necessity at a time like this.
“I urge the distinguished Senate to pass it swiftly, not only for its economic impact and the employment it will generate but also for the development and expansion of the entire mineral sector value chain.”
Plateau State governor added that the establishment of the university would have historical advantage, especially to Jos where mining started.
“When passed, this university will be sited in Jos, Plateau State, where mining in Nigeria began,” Mutfwang added.
